01THE SEASON

What is young-squid season?

On the Sea of Japan side of Yamaguchi, it runs from September to November. Squid born in spring have grown to about 100–800 g and school in the shallows along the breakwaters. They are plentiful and curious, which makes this the best season to start eging, but they are still small, so egi size matters.

02SIZE

Late October to November

3.0

03COLOR

Color: base tape and back cloth

The base tape under the cloth decides how it shines; the cloth color decides how much it stands out.

Base tape

  • Gold tape:Flashes in clear water on sunny days
  • Red tape:Turns into a dark silhouette in low light. Good at dawn, dusk, night and in murky water
  • UV glow:Glows bluish-white under UV. Good at dawn, dusk, on cloudy days and moonlit nights
  • Luminous:Glows softly in the dark. For moonless nights and deep water

Back cloth

  • Orange, pink:Stands out. Dawn, dusk, murky water
  • Brown, green, olive:Natural. Clear daytime water, wary squid
  • Purple, dark:A clear silhouette at night
